For a couple of years now I have been meaning to start a blog but have finally got around to it. I am passionate about the issue of young people in nursing homes and this blog is about research related to this issue and what I am reading and seeing that will create a movement that will solve the issue of young people in nursing homes in Australia.
What is TED?
Part of my inspiration for starting a blog comes from being at a TED conference. TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is an annual conference that defines its mission as "ideas worth spreading". The lectures, also called TED Talks, cover a broad set of topics including science, arts and design, politics, culture, business, global issues, technology and development, and entertainment. TED is a gathering of people from a myriad of backgrounds and disciplines who are passionate about changing the world through ideas, technology and design.
So to start this blog, I will share the highlights from TED that are relevant to disability, social justice and creating a movement.
Carpet:wheelchair friendly, beautiful and renewable!
I first heard of Interface Flor carpet tiles a couple of months ago from Sally Morgan (project worker for new Wesley Mission accommodation service in Glen Waverley, Melbourne). Sally has investigated and “road tested” a range of floor surfaces with some consumers in wheelchairs and decided to use Interface Flor carpet tiles in this new facility.
Then at TED, Ray Anderson (founder of interface) was inspiring with his story and deep commitment to sustainable ways of doing business. Interface Flor carpet tiles have Mission Zero “our promise is to eliminate any negative impact our company may have on the environment by the year 2020”. Interface Flor carpet tiles are made from recycled material and are renewable. If you can’t find a place to recycle a worn or damaged Flor tile, Interface invites you send it back o the factory and they’ll do it for you.
During this TED talk I was sitting next to an interior designer and I asked her if from an aesthetic perspective she liked working with Interface Flor carpet tiles – she loves working with nterface Flor carpet tiles they are beautiful as well as functional.
